In 2014, construction is scheduled to begin on an expansion to the Athletic Complex. The Gary and Rachel Sumers Recreation Center is slated to open in 2016 along with the Gary and Rachel Sumers Fitness Center.
The project includes a complete 36,000-square-foot interior
rejuvenation of historic Francis Gymnasium, site of the 1904
Olympics, as well as a 66,500-square-foot addition to the south
side of Francis Gymnasium and an additional 20,000 square feet of
improvements to the existing Athletic Complex.
The Athletic Complex
The Athletic Complex consists of several facilities: the Field House, David R. Francis Field, David R. Francis Gymnasium, James Butler Bushyhead Track and the Tao Tennis Center.
The facilities are designed to accommodate a wide range of individual and group recreational and intramural activities, as well as to serve as a home for our intercollegiate teams. Our extensive operational schedule seeks to provide every member of the Washington University community with an opportunity to participate in a series of programs: instructional, free play, intramural, varsity and sports clubs.
